Family Reunion June 2023
St Paul Minnesota: June 2023. This was my Late husband Roy's Family.
Friday: I had to get up early to make sure that we got there in Time for my Sister-In-Law Bay to catch the party bus!
I drove into Fort Wayne, Picked up Bay then we headed out for St Paul, We took the toll Road thru Chicago, and I was surprised that they accepted credit cards now. We got there in plenty of time, so we checked into our hotel. Thank god I had reserved a room ahead of time. I was fussing about having to pay $105 a night for the room, for a Motel 6, which was normally $60 a night. The lady at the desk stated that room were $459 a night. There was a lot of activity in the Minneapolis Paul area that weekend making hotel rooms scarce and expensive. I was very grateful to have the hotel room for the two nights that we stayed. It was in a great location and only about 5 miles from the places that we needed to be. We went to Bay's sister's house where Bay was to catch the Party bus. We both visited for a bit, but then I left and went back to the hotel. I am not much of a party bus type person. Bay's family member brought her back to the hotel.
Saturday: The party wasn't until 7pm, Bay and I wanted to go visit with family, but everyone slept in, most likely being tired from the Party bus the night before. Bay and I went to Sonic for lunch, and had burgers, tots and soda which were really good. Bay wanted to go the dollar general to get a pair of shoes, the Dollar general was closed - sign on the door saying they were closing at 11 due to high temps. Have no idea what they meant by high temps? it was in the low 70s. We ended up going the the Salvation Army, Bay found 2 pair of shoes that she liked and fit her. I found a pair of nice jeans that fit me. After we shopped we went back to the hotel., Bay and I decided to take a nap, and we woke at 6:50, so we were late to the Party. but all was well, we got there at 7:30. it was 70's themed. Bay had an afro wig, flowery pants, looked like she just came out of the 70s. I had tie-dye crocks :). the best i could do for the 70s. We had a wonderful time. The food was good, had chicken wings, my favorite. We all danced, ate, drank, listened to music, and visited with family until we got booted out at 1230. Some family went out to the local bars afterwards. Bay and i went back to the hotel and went to sleep. My brother David, went to my house in Pennville with a handyman friend, and fixed some siding that had blown off my house, and replaced some soffit pieces. I had asked him if he could visit my house to check to make sure the chickens had food and water, to collect eggs, and check on my cat Greyson. I think he wanted to surprise me on regarding the siding repair, but I have ring camera which told on him. I couldn't see the house where the siding was replaced with the camera, but i was able to see him carrying siding planks to the house.
Bay wtih her 70's afro
Sunday was the picnic which was scheduled to start at 3p. We had to be out of the hotel by 11, so Bay and I went to iHop for breakfast. I was able to pay the bill online with the iHop app. which was very convenient. after we ate we went to the park early. there was already several family members there setting up, and kids playing. The food was good, the company was even better. Bay and I had a wonderful time visiting and gossiping . Family members tried talking me into staying the night and driving home in the morning. but I really wanted to get home. I had a couple eBay orders that needed filled. I need to check on my chickens and my cat. Plus I just wanted to be home. After we left the park about 8pm we went to the hotel that Bay's granddaughter was staying at, as she wanted to ride home with us, as we were less crowded with just Bay and me. and she wanted to be home also.
Monday: I stopped at a couple rest stops where i took naps. We got to Chicago about 5:30am and the traffic was heavy and slowed down. Who gets up that early? I guess the 5:30 slowed traffic is better than the 7am stop and go traffic? I took the non-toll route home. Google maps said it was 20 miles - 30 minute longer. it took us off the Freeway, onto highway with traffic lights, which wasn't to bad. But I think the $15 in tolls is probably worth the time saved. I got Bay and her granddaughter home around 11:30am then I got myself home in Pennville around 12:30. all was well at home. My cat seemed glad to see me, and I gave the chickens some crackers and gathered eggs.
Cost Hotel $238, Gas $241
Things I learned: Even though my husband Roy passed away 8 years ago. His family still made me feel welcome and part of the family.
Take the toll roads thru Chicago, the miles and time saved is worth the $15 in tolls. I don't use toll roads often enough to have ez-pass, using credit card made it easy enough. last time I took a toll road, Cash was required.
Avoid meat, and drink lots of water. even while traveling. which is hard since there was so much meat available to eat. Chicken wings are hard for me to resist. Eating meat, salty snacks and not drinking enough water caused me to be stiff and swollen

I live on a 3½ acre farm in the middle of Indiana, I tried raising bees unsuccessfully, I'm guessing the farmers use pesticides for their crops?
I purchased several hazel nut trees that I planted, 4 have survived. The others that I had planted either I mowed over them, or they just didn't survive. My plan is to attempt to infest them with truffles.
